TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has reported that heavy rainfall across western Sumatra and parts of Java continues to be influenced by the indirect effects of Tropical Cyclone Seed 92S in the Indian Ocean, southwest of Sumatra.

Head of BMKG’s Weather Prediction and Early Warning Team Miming Saepudin said on Thursday that although the system is expected to move farther away from Indonesia, the public is advised to remain alert to the risk of extreme weather.

“Even as it moves away, the phenomenon can still affect local weather conditions. Moderate to heavy rainfall is still likely over the next two to three days,” he said.

BMKG identified several areas that need to heighten preparedness, including central and southern Sumatra up to Lampung, Banten, West Java, as well as parts of central and southern Java, including Jakarta.

“The potential for heavy rainfall is expected to occur mainly in the afternoon,” he added.

In response to the forecast, the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) has urged regional governments and communities to strengthen mitigation measures against hydrometeorological disasters, such as floods and landslides.

BNPB’s Head of Data, Information, and Disaster Communication Center Abdul Muhari called on residents in flood-prone areas to regularly monitor water levels and ensure drainage systems remain clear. He also advised residents to carry out self-evacuation if water discharge rises significantly to prevent casualties.
