TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Entering mid-2026, the travel trend among Indonesians shows a significant shift. Travelers from the archipelagic nations now favor short overseas vacations to regional cities across Asia and Australia. This is evident from the 35 percent surge in international flight bookings for four days or less, compared to the same period last year.
These numbers indicate a shift in travelers' strategies: instead of long holidays, people prefer to maximize long weekends and regular workdays for short getaways. Opting for relatively nearby destinations is deemed a practical solution to unwind amidst time constraints.
Regional Destinations
According to Trip.com data, neighboring countries in Southeast Asia such as Malaysia and Singapore still dominate the total volume of international flight departures.
However, dynamic movements are seen in destinations in northern parts of Asia and Australia, which recorded the most significant growth in interest.
Seoul in South Korea leads with a 370 percent annual growth in flight ticket bookings. Taipei follows closely with a 143 percent increase. Meanwhile, Australia has also become a new favorite for short trips, as evidenced by the soaring 132 percent increase in bookings to Melbourne and 112 percent to Sydney.
The popularity of these cities is driven by ease of flight access, urban lifestyle appeal, gastronomy, and popular cultural attractions.
General Manager of Trip.com Indonesia, Krishna Arya, stated that practicality is the major determining factor behind this mid-year tourism trend. Short vacations and regional city tours allow travelers to make the most of long weekends and holiday moments, and even offer the opportunity to explore various destinations in the Asia-Pacific region and beyond.
"Indonesian tourists tend to choose practical, flexible, and easily planned travel options," Krishna said in a press release on Thursday, June 25, 2026.
Early Planning and Increased Budget
Aside from the shorter vacations, the data also captures the maturity of Indonesian consumers in preparing for their trips. Currently, the average time for flight ticket bookings has increased by over five days compared to the same period the previous year. This change signifies that tourists are preparing more strategically to secure their preferred airlines and accommodations.
Interestingly, this short vacation planning is accompanied by greater financial readiness. On average, tourist spending on flight ticket purchases has surged by 28 percent y-o-y. The high market demand makes consumers willing to allocate a higher budget to secure direct routes and ideal flight schedules.
The trend of combining time efficiency, selection of urban destinations in Asia-Australia, and digital-based meticulous planning is projected to continue shaping the preferences of the Indonesian tourism market until the end of 2026.
