Prabowo Vows to Revoke Corporate Permits Over Land Burning

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has instructed law enforcement agencies to revoke corporate business permits if companies are suspected of carrying out or ordering the burning of forests and land.

Speaking at a coordination meeting on forest and land fire management in Pekanbaru, Riau, on Monday, Prabowo said firm action should be taken against corporations proven or suspected of directing parties to burn land for clearing purposes.

“I ask the police and prosecutors to investigate, and intelligence agencies to investigate. If there is an indication, report it immediately, and we will revoke the permits immediately,” Prabowo said, according to a broadcast by the Presidential Secretariat monitored in Jakarta on Monday.

He said the policy would apply to all corporations without exception. Prabowo added that all permits held by a corporation could be revoked if there were indications that it had ordered land to be burned.

“Any corporation, whoever they are, if there is even a slight indication that they ordered burning, we will revoke their permits, all of the corporation’s permits. I am serious about this,” Prabowo said.

Prabowo also instructed law enforcement authorities to prevent individuals from deliberately setting fires to clear land for any reason. He said public education at the village level should be strengthened so residents understand that land burning is prohibited.

He said people who need to clear land should not be left to find their own solutions by resorting to burning. Instead, the government will provide assistance through local governments, the Indonesian Military (TNI) and the National Police.

According to Prabowo, assistance with land clearing could be organized through farmer groups, with funding support available through programs including the People's Business Credit (KUR) and cooperatives.

“If they need to clear land, they should report it to the subdistrict head or regent, and the government will help them. The TNI and National Police will help, local governments will help the people, organized through farmer groups. The funding can then come through KUR or cooperatives,” he said.

Prabowo also emphasized the important role of the police in preventing and prosecuting forest and land fires, particularly when corporations are suspected of being involved.
