La Liga: Julian Alvarez Booed by Atletico Fans During 2-2 Draw With Villarreal

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Julian Alvarez was booed by Atletico Madrid supporters during their 2-2 draw with Villarreal on Sunday, August 23, as uncertainty over the Argentine forward's future continued to overshadow the team's La Liga campaign.

According to the BBC, Alvarez started on the bench at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano but was jeered by supporters while warming up. The reaction intensified when Atletico coach Diego Simeone sent him onto the field in the 66th minute.

Alvarez has been linked with moves to Arsenal and Barcelona after reportedly expressing a desire to leave Atletico. The forward said during the World Cup that he wanted to leave the club to "fulfil my dream."

As reported by Goal.com, sections of the Atletico crowd directed hostile chants toward Alvarez as he prepared to enter the match, reflecting the growing tension surrounding his future.

The 26-year-old struggled to make an impact during his cameo. Goal.com reported that he had 12 touches, one blocked shot and an expected goals figure of 0.05. He completed nine of 10 passes but failed to complete a dribble.

The match itself ended in dramatic fashion.

Atletico took the lead in the 59th minute when Marc Pubill curled a long-range effort into the top corner. Villarreal equalized seven minutes later after Morten Hjulmand fouled Tajon Buchanan inside the penalty area, allowing Gerard Moreno to convert from the spot.

Villarreal then took the lead after Atletico defender Robin Le Normand was sent off in the 76th minute for a foul on Georges Mikautadze inside the box. The Georgia international stepped up and converted the resulting penalty.

Atletico rescued a point five minutes from time when Giuliano Simeone finished a swift counterattack to make it 2-2.

The result left Atletico with four points from their opening two La Liga matches, while Villarreal had two points from two draws.

Alvarez's departure from the pitch after the final whistle added to the drama. While his Atletico teammates remained on the field to greet supporters, the forward headed down the tunnel and was met with further boos.

However, Simeone said the decision for Alvarez to leave immediately had been agreed beforehand.

"It wasn't Julian's decision, it was a decision from the club," Simeone said, according to the BBC.

The speculation surrounding Alvarez has intensified ahead of the September 1 transfer deadline. Arsenal and Barcelona have been linked with the forward, although Atletico have maintained that he will only leave if his enormous release clause is met.

Goal.com revealed that Atletico have set the release clause at €500 million, or about £428 million.

Arsenal remain interested in the Argentine, although the London club are also reportedly considering other attacking options, including Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen.

For now, Atletico face the challenge of managing Alvarez's unsettled situation while maintaining their focus on the La Liga season.
