'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' Swings Near Top 5 Box Office

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Spider-Man: Brand New Day continues to dominate movie theaters worldwide, generating US$109 million globally in its fourth weekend to push its total earnings to US$2.22 billion. According to reports from Entertainment Weekly, the Marvel and Sony release directed by Destin Daniel Cretton now sits as the sixth highest-grossing film of all time, closing in on James Cameron's Titanic (US$2.26 billion) for the fifth spot on the global charts.

The film starring Tom Holland and Zendaya earned US$39 million domestically and US$70 million across international markets over the weekend. Entertainment Weekly noted that the movie’s total domestic haul reached US$854.9 million, making it the highest-grossing release of the year in North America.

Deadline reported that the film has become Sony Pictures' highest-grossing release ever in 56 foreign markets, including Brazil, France, the United Kingdom, and South Korea.

In addition to its pursuit of Titanic, the film is also closing in on fifth-ranked Ne Zha 2 (US$2.27 billion) globally, while surpassing the original theatrical run of Star Wars: The Force Awakens (US$2.07 billion).

Rotten Tomatoes highlighted that Brand New Day holds the seventh-best fourth weekend in domestic box office history, tracking ahead of The Force Awakens' domestic pace at the same point in its release.

Meanwhile, Christopher Nolan's historical epic The Odyssey held the No. 2 spot globally in its sixth weekend, adding US$87.5 million to push its global total to US$1.44 billion. The film stands as Nolan's highest-grossing directorial effort to date, outperforming The Dark Knight domestically and setting market records for Universal Pictures in several international territories.

Other titles added to the global box office tally over the weekend. Insidious: Out of the Further opened to US$60.3 million globally, bringing the horror franchise past US$800 million lifetime, per Deadline. Meanwhile, Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie reached US$103.4 million globally, while festival acquisition Obsession and animated release Minions and Monsters both crossed the US$500 million threshold worldwide.
