TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung responded to the National Trade Estimate (NTE) Report on Foreign Trade Barriers 2025 released by the United States Trade Representative (USTR). In the report which became the basis for the increase in import tariffs by US President Donald Trump, the USTR highlights the Mangga Dua Market as a center for counterfeit goods.
Although the Mangga Dua Market is located in Jakarta, Indonesia, Pramono considers trade with the US to be under the authority of the central government. "It is the central government's affair," said Pramono in Penjaringan, North Jakarta on Sunday, April 20, 2025.
Meanwhile, Trade Minister Budi Santoso stated that the government continues to regularly monitor illegal goods circulating in the community, including at the Mangga Dua Market. "Actually, we have regular monitoring, it is continuously done. Yesterday, two days ago, we also confiscated those illegal goods, so we are constantly moving," said Budi in Jakarta on Sunday, April 20, 2025 as reported by Antara.
Budi stated that the government needs to enforce Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) amidst the rampant circulation of counterfeit goods in Indonesia. "In principle, indeed the United States also wants all kinds of IPR to be enforced. We will check on that matter first," said Budi.
According to him, the enforcement of IPR needs to be carried out in cooperation with any country. "In principle, with the US or with any country, it must be enforced," he said.
A Indonesian government delegation led by Coordinating Minister of Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto is currently negotiating with the United States government in Washington DC in response to the imposition of tariffs by President Donald Trump.
Previously, the USTR claimed that US trade with Indonesia experienced a deficit of up to US$17.9 billion in 2024. This figure rose by 5.4 percent or US$923 million from 2023. Indonesia was then levied with a reciprocal tariff of 32 percent.
In the National Trade Estimate Report on Foreign Trade Barriers 2025 published on March 31, 2025, the USTR noted various tariff and nontariff barriers faced by the country's trading partners, including Indonesia.
One of the issues highlighted by the US government is the circulation of illegal goods in Indonesia. The USTR points out the Indonesian government's lack of protection for intellectual property, as shown by the rampant cases of piracy and copyright infringements. In fact, this report specifically highlights the Mangga Dua Market in Jakarta, which is included in the Review of Notorious Markets for Counterfeiting and Piracy 2024.
