TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The United Nations (UN) has responded to Russia's announcement of a temporary ceasefire during Easter in Ukraine. "We consistently call for a sustained ceasefire in Ukraine," said UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric on Saturday, April 19, 2025, in a statement quoted from Anadolu.
Dujarric also reaffirmed the UN's support for efforts towards a fair, sustained, and comprehensive peace. He also expressed the hope that parties would uphold Ukraine's sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity in line with the UN Charter, international law, and relevant UN resolutions.
Dujarric's statement came after Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a unilateral 30-hour ceasefire on Saturday in the conflict in Ukraine.
Putin stated that the ceasefire would start at 6 p.m. Moscow time on Saturday, April 19, 2025, and end at midnight on Sunday.
"For humanitarian reasons, Russia has announced an Easter (Sunday) ceasefire today. I have ordered a halt to all military operations for this period," said Putin.
In response to Russia's Easter ceasefire announcement on Saturday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Kyiv would act in the same manner. In a statement on Telegram, Zelensky said Ukraine would also observe a ceasefire as long as Russia abides by it.
"Ukraine will act as Russia does. Silence in response to silence, attack in defense against an attack," he said.
Zelensky also proposed extending the ceasefire after April 20 on the condition that its implementation is successful. "If complete silence indeed occurs, Ukraine proposes to extend it after Easter on April 20 in the future," he stated.
"This will show Russia's true intentions because 30 hours are enough for headlines but not for real confidence-building measures. Thirty days could provide an opportunity for peace."
