TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian House Speaker Puan Maharani met with the Chairperson of the Palestinian Parliament, Rawhi Fattouh, on Sunday, April 20, 2025. They met at a discussion forum of The Group of Parliaments in support of Palestine in Istanbul, Turkey.
Puan encouraged Fattouh and supported Palestine. She said, ''Support for Palestine is a moral calling and part of the history of the Indonesian nation.''
The General Chairperson of the PDI-P Central Leadership Board stated that Indonesia's support for Palestine is not just governmental, but also by the parliament. Puan committed to strengthening cooperation between the Indonesian and the Palestinian parliament.
According to Puan, this strengthened cooperation can increase the gathering of support from other countries in supporting the struggle of the Palestinians. During the meeting, Puan also invited the Palestinian Parliament Chairperson to attend the meeting of the Parliamentary Union of the OIC Member States (PUIC) in Jakarta on May 12-15, 2025.
The Meeting of the Group of Parliaments in Support of Palestine resulted in a joint declaration to be adopted by each member country to enhance the capacity of the struggle for Palestine. One of the contents of the joint declaration that the Group of Parliaments in Support of Palestine must adopt is to use political influence through appropriate channels to defend, protect, and ensure the basic rights of the Palestinian people.
The Group of Parliaments in Support of Palestine also supports the right of the State of Palestine to become a full member of the United Nations and its organs, and calls on all countries that have not yet recognized Palestine to do so.
In addition to Indonesia, those who attended the forum of The Group of Parliaments in support of Palestine were Bahrain (Ahmad Salman Al Musalam), United Arab Emirates (Saqr Ghobash), Qatar (Hasan bin Abdulla Al-Ghanim), Malaysia (Johari Abdul), Pakistan (Sardar Ayaz Sadiq), Jordan (Ahmed Mohammed Ali Safadi), and Senegal (El Hadj Malick Ndiaye). Also present were the Parliament Vice Chair of Azerbaijan (Ali Ahmadov), Algeria (Hammad Ayoub), and Egypt (Ahmed Saad El Deen). The Chairperson of the Palestinian Parliament, Rawhi Fattouh, and representatives of the Palestinian government also attended the meeting.
