TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia posted a trade surplus of US$4.33 billion in March 2025, an increase of US$1.23 billion from the previous month, according to Acting Head of the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti.
Despite the month-on-month rise, BPS noted the surplus was slightly lower than in March last year. “This marks the 59th consecutive month of trade surplus since May 2020,” Amalia said during a BPS press conference on Monday, April 21, 2025.
A trade balance surplus is the condition when a country's export value is greater than its import within a specific period. Indonesia's export value in March 2025 reached US$23.25 billion, increasing by 5.95 percent on a monthly basis or month to month.
Meanwhile, Indonesia's import amounted to US$18.2 billion, rising by 0.38 percent monthly.
Based on the BPS report, the trade surplus in March 2025 was supported by non-oil and gas commodities worth US$6 billion. The main contributing commodities to the surplus were vegetable animal fats and oils or HS15, mineral fuels HS27, and iron and steel or HS72.
Meanwhile, the trade balance of oil and gas commodities recorded a deficit of US$1.67 billion, with the main deficit-contributing commodities being oil products and crude oil.
In March 2025, Indonesia experienced a trade surplus in non-oil and gas commodities with several countries. The three largest among them were the United States at US$ 1.98 billion, India at US$1.04 billion, and the Philippines at US$0.71 billion.
Indonesia also recorded trade deficits with several countries in March 2025, with the largest deficits posted with China (US$1.11 billion), Australia (US$350 million), and Thailand (US$195 million).
Overall, Indonesia’s trade balance from January to March 2025 showed a surplus of US$10.92 billion , an increase of US$3.51 billion compared to the same period in 2024.
