TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The United States (US) and Qatar are considering providing access to Iran for frozen assets worth US$6 billion (about Rp106.9 trillion) for humanitarian purposes, as reported by The Wall Street Journal on Saturday, June 20, 2026, as cited by Antara.
According to sources familiar with the matter, the initiative is being considered as an incentive for Iran to sign a comprehensive agreement to resolve the final conflict with the US, according to the newspaper report.
Under the plan, the currently frozen assets in Qatar would be liquidated for transactions to purchase food, medicines, and other humanitarian commodities.
The mechanism could provide a framework for further concessions affecting Iran's other frozen assets. However, Iran is reported to have not yet agreed to the proposal.
On Sunday, June 14, 2026, Iran and the United States declared that they had finalized a peace memorandum. Then, in the early hours of Thursday, June 18, 2026, the leaders of the two countries electronically and separately signed the agreement to end the war.
The signed peace memorandum provides a 60-day period for the US and Iran to negotiate their final agreement on the issue of Iran's nuclear and U.S. sanctions against Iran.
The agreement also sets a timeline for the US to end its naval blockade against Iran and for Iran to restore shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.
