TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The US Department of Homeland Security has proposed raising the filing fee for H-1B work visas to over US$103,000 (Rp1.82 billion).
"The Department of Homeland Security proposes setting a fee of US$103,265, payable at the time of registration, for all H-1B visa filings," according to a document obtained by RIA Novosti, as cited by Antara.
The unreleased document also notes that this fee—amounting to hundreds of thousands of dollars—"would be charged in addition to all other applicable fees or payments."
The document states that the fee is intended to cover a portion of the costs associated with visa processing.
The H-1B is a visa category that allows US employers to hire foreign nationals for specialized professions requiring "extraordinary aptitude and ability," as determined by US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).
Meanwhile, last June, a US federal judge ruled that President Donald Trump's decision to set a US$100,000 fee constituted an unlawful tax levy.
Subsequently, in July, Vice President JD Vance stated that the US Department of Labor was investigating dozens of alleged fraud cases involving the H-1B work visa program and had issued a number of subpoenas.
Vance argued that the misuse of H-1B visas suppresses wages for US workers. He added that those who abuse the visa program would be barred from entering the United States.
