TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Uruguayan national team has officially announced its 26-man squad for the 2026 World Cup. Coach Marcelo Bielsa has included Manchester United midfielder Manuel Ugarte in the squad, but has omitted veteran striker Luis Suarez.
The decision to omit Suarez was a major highlight of La Celeste's squad announcement. The 39-year-old striker had previously opened up about the possibility of a return to the national team despite being out for 20 months and stated he was ready to come out of retirement if Uruguay needed him.
However, Bielsa opted not to include the former Liverpool and Barcelona striker in the tournament taking place in North America.
In midfield, Bielsa continues to rely on Manuel Ugarte as a key pillar. The Manchester United player is one of three Premier League players included in the squad, along with Wolverhampton Wanderers defender Santiago Bueno and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur.
Meanwhile, Darwin Nunez continues to be trusted despite limited playing time in recent months. The former Liverpool striker, who now plays for Al-Hilal, has not featured in the Saudi Arabian League since February.
This situation arose after Al-Hilal had to adjust its foreign player quota following the signing of former Ballon d'Or winner Karim Benzema. Despite his limited club appearances, Bielsa still included Nunez in the World Cup squad.
Uruguay is in Group H of the 2026 World Cup and will begin their campaign against Saudi Arabia on June 15. After that, La Celeste is scheduled to face Cape Verde and Spain.
