TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - United States President Donald Trump has threatened, raised the possibility of attacking, or threatened military force against 15 countries during his two terms in office, or about one in every 13 countries in the world, according to a CNN report.
As quoted by ANTARA, Trump added Oman to the list on Wednesday, May 27, warning that the country would be "blown up" by the U.S. military if it tried to control the Strait of Hormuz with Iran, the report said.
"Oman will behave just like everybody else, or we’ll have to blow ‘em up," Trump said at a cabinet meeting at the White House.
The report said Trump's remarks seemed casual and were not part of a formal policy announcement. However, they reflected a broader pattern in Trump's foreign policy in which threats of military force have become common.
Oman is at least the 15th country Trump has threatened to attack, not ruled out, or actually attacked during his presidency. Nearly all of the cases occurred in the first 16 months of his second term, although some spanned both terms.
During his current term, Trump has launched attacks on seven countries: Iran, Iraq, Nigeria, Somalia, Syria, Venezuela, and Yemen. Some of these countries were also targets during his first term.
That number does not include attacks on vessels suspected of drug trafficking in the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean, which are said to have targeted nearly 60 vessels and killed more than 190 people, according to a CNN report.
Trump also threatened or raised the possibility of attacks on several other countries during his second term, including Canada, Colombia, Cuba, the Danish territory of Greenland, Mexico, Panama, and Oman. During his first term (2017-2021), Trump also threatened Mexico and North Korea.
These threats and attacks vary in nature. Some, including the attack in Iraq, are said to specifically target terrorist groups rather than the governments of the countries involved. Others are made more indirectly, with Trump refusing to rule out military options. However, the data shows how often Trump invoked the possibility of using military force in his statements.
According to the report, the countries Trump has threatened or attacked include about one in every 11 people in the world, meaning a large portion of the global population has reason to consider the possibility of U.S. military action under Trump's leadership.
The Middle East has become a major focus. Trump has now threatened or targeted five countries in the region: Iran, Iraq, Oman, Syria, and Yemen. The report also noted that Trump's threats and attacks spanned four of the world's six inhabited continents: Africa, Asia, North America, and South America.
Trump has also technically threatened the European nation of Denmark by discussing the possibility of taking over Greenland, a Danish territory in North America. In some cases, Trump's comments have gone beyond military threats and hinted at possible territorial expansion.
Of the 15 countries that have been threatened or attacked, five were mentioned by Trump as possible additional U.S. territories or targets of U.S. control: Canada, Cuba, Greenland, Panama, especially the Panama Canal, and Venezuela.
