Search Team Recovers 35 Victims from Tunu Pratama Jaya Ship Sinking, Six Dead

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Head of Public Relations of the East Java Provincial Police, Grand Commissioner Jules Abraham Abast, reported that the number of victims from the sinking of the Tunu Pratama Jaya passenger ferry has now reached 35.

These victims were found in Bali waters and are being handled by the Jembrana Regional Police.

“They consist of 29 survivors, and 6 others have died,” said Abast in a press release on Friday, July 4, 2025.

According to Abast, the deceased victims were previously identified by the DVI Team of the Bali Regional Police at the Gilimanuk Post in Bali. Following the identification process, coordination was made with the East Java Regional Police's DVI Team, stationed at the Ketapang Post in Banyuwangi, to receive the six bodies.

The bodies were handed over to the victims’ families at the Ketapang Port in Banyuwangi on Thursday night by the Minister of Transportation and the East Java Police Chief. Abast confirmed that search and evacuation efforts will continue until all passengers are accounted for.

The operation is being conducted in close coordination with Basarnas, the Indonesian military (TNI), the ferry company ASDP, and local authorities.

“Up to now, 35 personnel from the East Java Water Police, along with officers from Baharkam Polri and the Banyuwangi Regional Police, have been deployed to assist in the search together with relevant agencies,” he added.

The incident occurred when the Tunu Pratama Jaya ferry was loading and unloading at LCM Ketapang Port at 10:28 PM and departed for Gilimanuk at 10:56 PM local time.

At approximately 11:15 PM the ship lost contact with the Land Transportation Management Center (BPTD) and was later confirmed to have sunk in the Bali Strait.

The ferry, which was carrying dozens of passengers, capsized due to severe weather and high waves on Wednesday night, July 2, 2025. At the time, waves reached 2.5 meters and wind speeds were recorded at 9 knots.

Wahyu Setia Budi, Coordinator of the Banyuwangi SAR Post, stated that Basarnas began search efforts shortly after receiving the report of the shipwreck.

“There are difficulties with the weather and waves in the Bali Strait, reaching around 2.5 meters, making it difficult for the SAR team,” he said on Thursday, July 3.
