Gov't Disclose Chronology and Cause of Juliana Marins' Fatal Fall on Mount Rinjani

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The death of Brazilian climber Juliana Marins continues to spark public concern. She reportedly fell to her death while ascending Mount Rinjani in West Nusa Tenggara.

Juliana is believed to have fallen in the Rinjani hiking area on the morning of Saturday, June 21, 2025. Her body was only discovered by the search and rescue (SAR) team on Tuesday, June 24, at a depth of 600 meters.

The Head of the Mataram SAR Office, Muhamad Hariyadi, said Juliana's body was located in a deep ravine around 06:00 PM Central Indonesia Time.

"After the initial examination, no signs of life were found on the victim," said Hariyadi.

Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Corrections Yusril Ihza Mahendra stated that Juliana fell from a high cliff and landed in a rocky ravine.

"Thrown from a height of 600 meters onto rocks," said Yusril during a press conference on Friday, July 4, 2025.

He explained that during the fall, Juliana's head and body struck the rocky surface, which caused fatal injuries. "Only 15 to 30 minutes after the fall, Juliana had already passed away," said Yusril.

Based on the forensic autopsy results, Yusril said Juliana sustained severe internal injuries. She had multiple fractures to her chest, spine, back, and thigh bones, with the most severe damage occurring to the spine.

For this reason, Yusril considered it highly unlikely that she could have survived the fall. "Even if found in a very short time, the possibility of saving the victim's life is also small," he said.

Yusril also rejected accusations that the Indonesian government was slow to respond in the rescue operation. He emphasized that the search team did all they could despite challenging weather and difficult terrain. "Using a helicopter for evacuation is very difficult. The only way is manual evacuation, which takes longer," Yusril explained.

According to a report by The Independent, Juliana had been hiking Mount Rinjani with five other foreign tourists and a local guide. She reportedly lost her footing and fell from a cliff approximately 600 meters high.

The fall is believed to have occurred at around 6:30 a.m. local time near the volcano crater trail. Reports suggest that Juliana initially survived the fall and was seen moving and calling for help.
