TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) recorded the country’s hottest summer since temperature measurements began in 1901, local media reported on Thursday, August 27.
According to Dutch public broadcaster NOS, citing ANTARA, the average temperature over the past three months at the KNMI's main station in De Bilt reached 19.3 degrees Celsius. This surpasses the previous record of 18.9 degrees Celsius set in 2018.
This year's summer was marked by repeated heat waves, very warm nights and prolonged drought, the report said. The KNMI issued its first red alert in its history for extreme heat conditions last June.
"We had the highest number of days above 35 degrees, the number of tropical days is higher than ever, never before have we had so many consecutive days with nighttime temperatures of 22 degrees or higher," said KNMI climate expert Peter Siegmund.
The southern Netherlands is experiencing particularly severe nighttime heat, NOS reports. In Maastricht, temperatures remained above 22 degrees Celsius for three consecutive nights for the first time on record.
"In the high scenario, this will be an average summer around 2050, in terms of temperature," Siegmund said.
According to Siegmund's calculations, a summer with temperatures like those recorded this year could now occur once every five years under current climate conditions. As global warming continues, such conditions are expected to become more frequent.
Siegmund said effective climate policies could still significantly impact long-term temperature rise. He said that by 2050, the difference between the KNMI's high and low emissions scenarios could be about 1 degree Celsius, increasing to 4 degrees Celsius by the end of the century.
