TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The protest on Thursday, August 27, at the Parliament (DPR) building in Jakarta ended in chaos. The police accused the protesters outside the United Pati Society Alliance (AMPB) of coming only to cause a riot.
The Head of Public Relations of the Jakarta Metropolitan Police, Senior Commissioner Budi Hermanto, stated that the AMPB protesters were orderly in conveying their aspirations. The AMPB protesters had retreated from the DPR building after being received by parliament representatives. “They (the protesters) have returned,” said Budi to journalists on Thursday night.
The AMPB coordinator, Supriyono, better known as Botok, stated that the AMPB held the rally with two demands: the ratification of the Asset Forfeiture Bill and the implementation of the death penalty for corruptors. AMPB denied that their action was to demand the removal of President Prabowo Subianto and Vice President Gibran Rakabuming.
The police stated that the protesters outside the AMPB, who insisted on staying at the DPR building until late at night, were uncoordinated. According to Budi, this group deliberately came only to cause damage. “They did not convey their aspirations,” said Budi.
The police pushed back the remaining protesters from around 7:00 PM. The police led the protesters away towards the Ladokgi Flyover at around 7:00 PM.
Based on Tempo's observation, the authorities initially fired water cannons from within the Senayan complex. “Brothers and sisters, please leave the location,” said one of the officers over a loudspeaker.
After warnings and the water cannon shots, several police platoons began to come out and chase the protesters. Some of them appeared to be wearing all-black attire and carrying wooden sticks.
Several protesters scattered into the Inner City Toll area. They were then chased by several other police officers using motorcycles.
