TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it has yet to receive any reports regarding Indonesian nationals being affected by the ongoing record-breaking heatwave striking Europe since late June.

Heni Hamidah, Director of Indonesian Citizen Protection at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, affirmed that citizens staying across Europe remain safe, despite some countries issuing alerts for extreme and oppressive heat.

"We are working closely with our representatives [in the European countries], and to date, no Indonesian citizens have been affected or reported [to have been affected], or become victims of the heatwave," Heni Hamidah said in Jakarta on Wednesday, July 1, as quoted from Antara. "Not yet."

However, Indonesian representatives across Europe continue to urge Indonesians in the countries to remain vigilant and take measures to minimize the impact of the heatwave.

On Sunday, June 28, Anadolu reported that the World Health Organization (WHO) recorded more than 1,300 excess deaths across Europe over the past week due to the extreme heatwave that has hit the continent.

"More than 1300 excess deaths have been recorded since 21 June linked to the extreme heat in Europe," said WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Ghebreyesus called heat stress a "silent killer," especially as homes, workplaces, and schools in Europe are not designed to withstand such high temperatures.

WHO is working with Member States and partners to strengthen health systems' preparedness, prevention, and response to extreme heat.
