Germany Rally Past Ivory Coast 2-1 in World Cup Thriller

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Germany secured a dramatic 2-1 victory over Ivory Coast in the second match of Group J of the World Cup 2026 at BMO Field, Toronto, on Sunday, June 21, 2026. Two goals by Deniz Undav in the second half turned the tide for the team under the guidance of Julian Nagelsmann after initially falling behind.

This result puts Germany at the top of the Group J standings with six points from two matches. They are ahead of Ivory Coast, which sits in second position with three points. Ecuador and Curacao have yet to earn any points.

From the start of the match, Germany looked dominant. They controlled 59 percent of ball possession and unleashed 16 shots, seven of which were on target. Ivory Coast only managed nine shots with two on target.

Germany's first opportunity came in the 10th minute. Kai Havertz met a cross with a header from inside the penalty area, but goalkeeper Yahia Fofana made a brilliant save.

Germany initially found the back of the net in the 21st minute through Aleksandar Pavlovic. However, the referee disallowed the goal due to an earlier foul.

Despite continuous pressure, Germany actually fell behind in the 30th minute. Stemming from a melee in front of the goal, Franck Kessie seized the loose ball and fired a shot into the bottom left corner of the net to give Ivory Coast a 1-0 lead. The score remained the same until halftime.

Entering the second half, Nagelsmann made several changes. Antonio Rudiger replaced Nico Schlotterbeck during the break. In the 60th minute, Deniz Undav, Nadiem Amiri, and Jamie Leweling were also brought in to increase the team's attacking strength.

These changes immediately paid off. In the 68th minute, Undav scored the equalizer after receiving an accurate cross from Amiri inside the penalty area. The German forward controlled the ball well before firing a shot that struck the top of the net.

Following that goal, Germany intensified the pressure. Nathaniel Brown and Amiri had golden opportunities in the final minutes but were still denied by Fofana.

As the match seemed to be heading for a draw, Germany finally scored the winning goal in injury time. In the 90+4th minute, Undav received a pass from Felix Nmecha inside the penalty area and unleashed a low shot that found the back of the net at the center of Ivory Coast's goal. The goal secured a 2-1 victory for Germany.
