TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - French President Emmanuel Macron said on Saturday, April 18, 2026, that a French soldier was killed and three others were injured in an attack in southern Lebanon targeting the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).
In a post on the U.S.-based social media platform X, as reported by Anadolu, Macron said, "Sergeant Major Florian Montorio of the 17th Parachute Engineer Regiment in Montauban was killed this morning in southern Lebanon during an attack against UNIFIL."
He said three other soldiers were injured and have been evacuated.
"The nation bows in respect and expresses its support to the families of our soldiers and to all our military personnel committed to peace in Lebanon," Macron said.
"Everything suggests that Hezbollah is responsible for this attack," without elaborating further.
Macron said France demands that the Lebanese authorities "immediately arrest those responsible and take responsibility alongside UNIFIL."
As reported by CNN, UNIFIL stated in a release that their patrol was clearing explosive materials along a road in the village of Ghanduriyah in southern Lebanon when they "came under attack with light weapons by a non-state actor."
The forces said two of the three injured soldiers suffered serious injuries.
Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam condemned the attack and said he had given instructions for an immediate investigation.
"It goes without saying that this irresponsible behavior inflicts serious damage on Lebanon and its relations with its friendly and supportive countries around the world," he added.
The attack occurred amid a 10-day ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon announced by U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday, following direct talks between Israeli and Lebanese representatives earlier this week in Washington, DC, the first in decades.
