TEMPO.CO, Jakarta- The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) stated that the 6.2-magnitude tectonic earthquake that struck the South Sandwich Islands region did not trigger tsunami risks in Indonesia.
BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Director Wijayanto stated in Jakarta on Thursday that this was based on tsunami monitoring modeling results conducted after the earthquake struck this morning at 6:46 a.m. Western Indonesian Time.
"The tsunami modeling results indicate that this earthquake poses no tsunami potential in Indonesia," he said.
Wijayanto explained that the BMKG's updated parameters recorded the earthquake as having a magnitude of 6.2 at a depth of 119 kilometers.
The epicenter was located offshore at coordinates 56.12 degrees South Latitude (S) and 27.85 degrees West Longitude (W), approximately 2,008 kilometers southeast of Stanley, Falkland Islands.
Judging from the location of the epicenter and the depth of the hypocenter, he maintained that this tremor was classified as an intermediate earthquake triggered by the subduction of the South American Plate under the Sandwich Plate. Analysis of the source mechanism indicates that the rock movement was a thrust fault.
"Regarding the earthquake in the South Pacific Ocean, BMKG urges Indonesians, especially those living in coastal areas, to remain calm and avoid unverifiable information," he said.
Wijayanto also reminded the public to verify all official information regarding the earthquake and tsunami through BMKG's verified communication channels and social media channels.
