TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Vietnam successfully defended their 2026 ASEAN Championship, or AFF Cup, title after a 2-2 draw against Thailand in the second leg of the final at My Dinh National Stadium, Hanoi, late Wednesday, August 26, 2026.
This result gave Vietnam a 4-2 aggregate victory over Thailand. Golden Star had previously won 2-0 in the first leg at Rajamangala Stadium.
This victory secured Vietnam their fourth AFF Cup title in history. They also successfully defended the trophy they won in the 2024 edition.
Thailand put up a fierce fight and took the lead twice, but an own goal sealed Vietnam's victory.
Thailand took the lead in the 12th minute. Yotsakon Burapha unleashed a powerful shot after receiving a pass from Seksan Ratree, which Vietnam goalkeeper Le Giang Patrik failed to stop.
Vietnam tried to respond and nearly equalized through Nguyen Xuan Son. However, his header hit the Thai goalpost.
No further goals were scored until the end of the first half, leaving Thailand with a 1-0 scoreline.
Entering the second half, Thailand had a chance to widen the gap after being awarded a penalty kick. However, Kakana Khamyok's effort sailed well over the Vietnamese goal.
Vietnam then equalized in the 52nd minute. Do Hoang Hen's loose ball hit Chatchai Bootprom before going into his own net. The score was now a 1-1 draw.
Thailand regained the lead in the 85th minute. Wanchai Jarunongkran finished off a cross from the right flank to make it 2-1.
However, Thailand's victory was shattered again in injury time. Wanchai Jarunongkran scored an own goal in the 90+3 minute, giving the match a 2-2 draw.
The draw was enough for Vietnam to secure the title with a 4-2 aggregate victory over Thailand.
