Meet Dolly Parton's Family: The Loved Ones Behind the Music Icon

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Dolly Parton, the legendary country music singer, songwriter and actress, died on August 25, 2026, at age 80. Her family announced her death, bringing an end to the life of an artist whose career spanned more than six decades. Her team later confirmed that she died following a brief battle with cancer. 

Behind Parton’s extraordinary career was a large and closely connected family. She grew up in East Tennessee as the fourth of 12 children, raised by parents who instilled in her a love of music, storytelling and hard work. Her siblings, parents and husband Carl Dean all played important roles in her personal story, while her family continued to influence her music and philanthropy throughout her life.

Who were Dolly Parton’s parents?

Dolly’s parents were Robert Lee “Lee” Parton and Avie Lee Parton, according to People. They married in 1939 and raised their children in modest circumstances in East Tennessee. Lee worked as a sharecropper and construction worker, while Avie Lee was a homemaker who encouraged music and storytelling in the family. 

Lee and Avie died in the early 2000s. On November 12, 2000, Lee died at 79 at the Baptist Hospital of East Tennessee. Three years later, Avie Lee died at 80 on December 5, 2003. To honor her parents, Dolly created Dollywood, a theme park where memorials to Lee and Avie Lee now stand in the cabin’s front garden. 

Who were Dolly Parton’s siblings?

Dolly grew up with 11 siblings: Willadeene, David, Coy “Denver,” Robert Jr., Stella, Cassie, Randy, Larry, Floyd, Freida and Rachel. Several family members became involved in music, and Dolly remained closely connected to her siblings throughout her life. 

She experienced the loss of several siblings throughout her life. According to USA Today, her younger brother Larry, the ninth of 12 children, died just four days after his birth in 1955, a tragedy later portrayed in Parton’s 2015 TV movie “Dolly Parton’s Coat of Many Colors.” More recently, her brother Coy “Denver” Parton died in July 2026 at 82. Other siblings who predeceased her include Floyd, who died in 2018 at 61, Randy, who died in 2021 at 67, and David, who died in 2024 at 82.

Who was Dolly Parton’s husband?

Dolly married Carl Dean in 1966, beginning a marriage that lasted nearly six decades until he died in 2025. Dean largely stayed out of the spotlight, while Parton became one of the world's biggest entertainers. 

The two shared a private love story that began in 1964, when 21-year-old Dean first spotted 18-year-old Parton after she moved to Nashville and waved to her outside the Wishy Washy Laundromat.

Did Dolly Parton have children?

Dolly and Dean did not have children. Parton said she believed not becoming a mother allowed her greater freedom to focus on her career, while she remained deeply involved with her nieces and nephews, whom she affectionately considered her own. 

She also took on a motherly role for children worldwide through her Imagination Library, which has distributed hundreds of millions of free books since it was launched in 1995.
