TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The death toll from the magnitude 7.7 earthquake that struck Flores, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), has reached 100, according to the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB).

BNPB chief Lieutenant General Suharyanto said the figure covered deaths recorded from the initial earthquake on August 15 through August 24, 2026.

“We emphasize that the 100 deaths are an accumulated figure, including victims who initially suffered severe injuries, were treated at health facilities, but could not be saved,” Suharyanto said at an online press conference on Monday, August 24.

Manggarai recorded the highest number of deaths at 38, followed by East Manggarai with at least 34. Nagekeo recorded 13 deaths, Sikka six, Ngada five, Ende three, and West Manggarai one.

More Than 180,000 People Displaced

BNPB has also recorded at least 1,603 people injured who remain under medical care.

The number of people displaced by the earthquake has reached 180,327, Suharyanto said.

The earthquake also damaged tens of thousands of homes and public facilities across the affected areas.

Nine days after the disaster, BNPB recorded 73,818 damaged homes, comprising 23,276 heavily damaged, 17,563 moderately damaged and 32,979 lightly damaged houses.

Public facilities including schools, places of worship, government offices and other infrastructure were also damaged.

BNPB recorded 1,915 damaged public facilities so far.

Suharyanto said the figures were being compiled through a bottom-up process, beginning at the neighborhood level and moving through villages, subdistricts and regencies.

“The data are collected in stages, bottom-up, starting from the smallest levels such as villages and neighborhood units and then moving up to the village, subdistrict and regency levels,” he said.

Prabowo Holds Meeting on Recovery

Nine days after the earthquake struck Flores, President Prabowo Subianto had yet to visit the affected areas.

Instead, Prabowo held a meeting with several members of his cabinet and military leaders at his residence in Hambalang, Bogor, West Java, on Monday to discuss continued disaster response and post-earthquake reconstruction.

“The government continues to ensure that the support ordered reaches affected areas and supports the community’s recovery process,” Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya said in a written statement.

The meeting also covered forest and land fires in Kalimantan.

Government Adds Firefighting Aircraft

To strengthen the response to forest and land fires in Kalimantan, the government has deployed 17 additional water-bombing aircraft, Teddy said.

Another 1,500 personnel, along with individual equipment, have also been sent to reinforce firefighting operations.

The government has additionally deployed 200 pumps and pipes to help tackle underground fires in peatlands.

Teddy said Prabowo had praised the Indonesian Military (TNI) and National Police for their rapid response to operations in the field, including efforts to tackle forest and land fires in Kalimantan, respond to the earthquake in NTT and provide public services in other regions.
