TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - All 133 cardinal electors who will cast their votes in the papal conclave have arrived in Rome, according to a report by Vatican News citing the head of the Holy See Press Office, Matteo Bruni on Monday and quoted by Antara.
It is stated that the secretive papal election will commence on Wednesday, May 7, 2025.
The cardinal electors will be accommodated at Casa Santa Marta, which has traditionally hosted the cardinals during the papal conclave, and at the old Santa Marta, a playground for the children of Vatican employees, located nearby.
Earlier on the same day, the 10th General Congregation was held at the Vatican, attended by 179 cardinals. A total of 133 of them, aged under 80, will cast their votes to elect the new pope on Wednesday afternoon.
It will require a two-thirds majority vote to elect the new pope.
The first Latin American Pope, Pope Francis, passed away on April 21 at the age of 88 at his residence in Vatican City. He was then laid to rest at the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome on April 26.
