Indonesia's Ministry of Forestry (MoF) stated that there are 19 new flora and fauna species discovered throughout this year. Discoveries from Sabang to Merauke, which have been documented in various scientific journals, were announced close to the National Conservation of Nature Day (HKAN) 2025, on August 10th.
The Director General of Natural Resources and Ecosystem Conservation, Satyawan Pudyatmoko, expressed his hope that HKAN will not only be ceremonial. "But also a tangible form of our commitment to prioritize conservation in every aspect of life, both social and developmental aspects," he said in a written statement on Monday, August 11, 2025.
Among the 11 new flora species discovered are Begonia bukitrayaens, Begonia kalimantana, Bulbophyllum bukitbakariense, Bulbophyllum abuniorum, Bullbophyllum sandfordiorum, Morchella rinjaniensis, Dendrobium wanmae, Dendrobium eruciforme, Mediocalcar gemma-coronae, Homalomena chikmawatiae, and Chiloschista tjiasmantoi.
As for the newly announced fauna species, they include Cyrtodactylus pecelmadiun, Limnonectes maanyanorum, Limnonectes nusantara, Rhacophorus boeadii, Diancta batubacan, Thlaspidula gandangdewata, Thlaspidula sarinoi, and Barbodes klapanunggalensis.
The discoveries until mid-2025 turned out to be much less compared to the results of 2024. Last year, during the same period, there were 14 flora and 26 fauna discovered from various regions.
Minister of Forestry Raja Juli Antoni stated that Indonesia is one of the countries with the greatest biodiversity in the world. 10 percent of the world's flower plant species are found in Indonesia, and 12 percent of mammals originate from Indonesia. There are also 15 percent of reptile and amphibian species, as well as 17 percent of fish species.
"There are very few countries that possess the biodiversity wealth that we have," he said.
