TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Japan has been named Asia's Leading Adventure Tourism Destination at the World Travel Awards 2025, dethroning last year's winner, Indonesia. The title was awarded to Japan at the ceremony in Hong Kong on Monday, October 13, 2025.

Japan earned this distinction for its diverse landscapes, rich culture, and extensive array of activities. Visitors can hike ancient trails, ski in Hokkaido, dive in Okinawa, and explore volcanic regions.

This award signals Japan's rising global appeal to adventure seekers and highlights the country's unique combination of natural diversity and advanced infrastructure, which allows visitors to enjoy a wide range of exhilarating outdoor experiences.

The Lure of Japan's Adventure Tourism

Japan offers abundant activities for those looking to immerse themselves in nature and adventure. From the snow-covered peaks of Hokkaido to the warm tropical waters of Okinawa, the country presents a perfect blend of natural beauty and outdoor pursuits suitable for all types of adventurers.

Visitors can hike ancient pilgrimage trails, such as the Kumano Kodo (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), or enjoy a thrilling skiing experience in Hokkaido, which is renowned for its light, fluffy snow and world-class resorts.

In Okinawa, travelers can dive into crystal-clear waters to explore vibrant coral reefs and diverse marine life. Additionally, Japan’s volcanic regions, including the iconic Mount Fuji and the active volcanoes of Kyushu, offer rugged terrain perfect for exploration.

Beyond its natural wonders, travelers can also enjoy cultural and historical adventures in Japan. They can explore ancient temples, experience traditional Japanese customs, and savor local cuisine while indulging in their chosen adventure activities.

The country's well-developed transportation network also makes accessing these remote adventures easy, even from major cities. This accessibility is reflected in the tourism numbers: Japan welcomed 31.65 million foreign tourists between January and September, a significant 17.7 percent increase compared to the previous year.
