Mount Merapi surrounded by four regencies in the province of Central Java and the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY), Indonesia, is currently still on alert status or Level III. This is due to the volcanic activity in Mount Merapi, which is still quite high during the peak of the dry season falling in July-August 2025. Effusive eruption activities still frequently occur, so its status has not been downgraded since it was first established in November 2020.
The Geological Disaster Technology Research and Development Center (BPPTKG) Yogyakarta stated that in the observation of the past week, 1-7 August 2025, the weather around Mount Merapi was generally clear in the morning and at night, while it was foggy from noon to late afternoon.
Mount Merapi's Activities in a Week
During that week, there was one occurrence of hot clouds avalanches towards the upstream of Krasak River with a sliding distance of 800 meters. Additionally, within the week, Mount Merapi was observed to have emitted 110 times of lava avalanches that spread towards the upstream of Boyong River (sliding distance 1,800 meters), upstream of Krasak River (maximum 1,800 meters), upstream of Bebeng River (maximum 1,800 meters), and upstream of Sat/Putih River (maximum 2,000 meters).
"Based on aerial photograph analysis, the volume of the southwest side dome increased by about 90,500 cubic meters in a week, reaching 4,101,500 cubic meters. Meanwhile, the volume of the central dome remained relatively constant at 2,369,900 cubic meters," said the Head of BPPTKG Yogyakarta, Agus Budi Santoso, on Monday.
Despite entering the dry season, rain still poured around Mount Merapi in early August. BPPTKG Yogyakarta noted that rain had occurred around the Mount Merapi Observation Post with the highest rainfall intensity recorded on 5 August 2025, at Kaliurang Post, reaching 20.72 mm/hour for 71 minutes.
"However, the rain did not lead to an increase in flows or lahars in the rivers originating from Mount Merapi," he said.
Tourists Warned to Stay Alert
With the volcanic activity of Mount Merapi still quite high, BPPTKG Yogyakarta urged the public and tourists to remain vigilant and adhere to the existing advice. Currently, the potential hazards have not changed in the form of lava avalanches and hot clouds in the danger zone with established radii.
"Stakeholders in Mount Merapi disaster management are recommended to continue mitigation efforts in facing the threat of Mount Merapi eruption," said Agus.
The public is also asked not to engage in any activities in the potential hazardous areas around Mount Merapi.
