Shin Tae-yong Eyes Reunion With Former Indonesia Stars at Persija

21 hours ago 3

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta New Persija Jakarta coach, Shin Tae-yong, has opened the possibility of recruiting some players who have previously been under his tutelage in the Indonesian national team to strengthen Macan Kemayoran in the upcoming season. The former Indonesian national team coach expressed his desire to work again with some players he had previously coached.

However, he noted that the realization of this plan depends on the situation of each player, including their current contract status with their clubs. "Certainly, there is an intention to bring back previous national team players who were with me. But we have to see the situation of each player, such as their contracts possibly being tied to other teams at the moment and so on," Shin said at the Jakarta International Stadium (JIS) in North Jakarta on Monday, June 8, 2026.

During his tenure with the Indonesian national team from 2020 to 2025, Shin was known to have several key players, some of whom are now part of the Persija squad, such as Rizky Ridho, Witan Sulaeman, and Jordi Amat.

Additionally, the South Korean coach confirmed that he will bring a number of coaching staff who previously worked with him in the national team. "For assistant coaches, the coaches that the journalists also recognize, certainly because they were previously with the national team," he said as quoted by Antara.

Shin also revealed the playing style he plans to implement with Persija. Unlike the approach with the Indonesian national team, which relied more on defense and counter-attacks, he wants Macan Kemayoran to be more aggressive and attacking.

He explained that the national team's playing style had been adjusted to the quality of opponents, who were generally above Indonesia's level. "Indeed, with the national team, because the opponents were stronger and better than the national team, we always had to defend first and then counter attack," he said.

To realize this playing style, Shin stated that he is still in discussions with the management regarding the composition of players, especially the foreign players. "After that, we can definitely play better and faster, more aggressively attacking," he added.

During the same occasion, Shin confirmed that Persija has secured the services of former Borneo FC player, Mariano Peralta. "For Peralta, it seems like he has been contracted, from what I've heard, and I'm happy about it. So, I would like to welcome Peralta with great pleasure," said the 57-year-old coach.

Although not officially announced by the club yet, Peralta was one of the most prominent foreign players in the Super League last season. In his debut season in Indonesia, the Argentine player scored 20 goals and provided 14 assists for Borneo FC. Peralta also appeared in all 34 league matches and was always a starter. His contribution helped Borneo FC compete until the last week in the title race before eventually losing to Persib Bandung based on their head-to-head record.

Shin indicated that there will be significant changes to the composition of foreign players for Persija in the upcoming season. Conversely, changes to local players are expected to be minimal. "For the squad, we are still continuously discussing with Mr. Panca and the owner of Persija Jakarta. Perhaps there will be many changes for foreign players, but not many changes for local players," he said.

In addition to building a competitive squad, Shin Tae-yong will also be involved in the development of young Persija players during his three-year contract. "For the future of Indonesian football, young players need a lot of game time. I believe that young players need to play in the Indonesian League," he stated.

So far, Persija has released seven foreign players out of a total of 11 foreign players from last season, namely Carlos Eduardo, Bruno Tubarao, Jean Mota, Emaxwell Souza, Allano Lima, Thales Lira, and Alaaeddine Ajaraie.
