TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Navy (TNI AL) Marine Corps distributed the Red and White flags to the community on Sebatik Island, Nunukan Regency, North Kalimantan, in preparation for the country’s 81st Independence Day.
"We distributed flags to every household. We also gave flags to passing vehicles so that the public could join in the celebration of Indonesian Independence Day," said Captain Ahmad Rizwan, Commander of the Marine Task Force for Security of the Outer Islands XXX, in Sebatik on Saturday, citing ANTARA.
Soldiers distributed flags from house to house to residents, fishermen, and passersby. According to him, the activity aimed to foster a sense of patriotism, especially among those living in border areas.
The Marine Corps, along with local sub-district officials, will also collaborate in preparing flag-raising troops and assisting in preparations for the August 17 ceremony.
Not only that, various social activities and competitions will be held with the community as a form of togetherness between TNI soldiers and residents. The volleyball and football fields located right in front of the command headquarters will be used as a community activity centre.
"We plan to hold various competitions with the community. The goal is to get closer to the community and celebrate Indonesian Independence Day," he said.
Rizwan acknowledged that the celebrations held to mark Independence Day in border areas are more limited than those held in urban areas. However, he believes this will not dampen the community's enthusiasm for celebrating Independence Day.
"Perhaps the celebrations in the city are more festive, while here they're simpler. However, the celebrations are still solemn and full of enthusiasm," he said.
The Marine Corps invites the people of Sebatik Island to continue to maintain national unity and strengthen their love for their homeland even though they live in a border area that directly borders a neighboring country.
"Even though we are in a border area, the feeling of love for our country must remain strong. Let's welcome the 81st Independence Day of the Republic of Indonesia together with enthusiasm, joy, and solemnity," he said.
