TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The drug investigators of the Directorate of Drug Crime at the Indonesian National Police Criminal Investigation Department have designated two producers of nitrous oxide (N2O) under the brand Whip Pink as suspects. The police have refuted claims that Whip Pink meets the safety standards for food-grade materials.
"If we look at their Business Identification Number (NIB), they state that it's food-grade, but our investigative findings differ," said the Head of Subdirectorate III of Drug Crime at the Criminal Investigation Department of the Indonesian National Police, Commissioner Zulkarnain Harahap, at the Indonesian National Police Criminal Investigation Department headquarters on Thursday, July 23, 2026.
Zulkarnain explained that the raw material for the gas is sourced from ammonium nitrate imported from Germany and falls under the medical category or medical grade. The gas is then transferred from large cylinders to small ones for reproduction. "Legally speaking, the act of altering the cylinder from large to small falls under the category of production," he added.
The police have found that the distribution of the Whip Pink laughing gas is not intended for the food industry, but rather distributed to various nightlife venues. Investigators have discovered sales receipts directly from PT SSS to nightclubs, where the gas is sold using balloons for visitors to inhale.
Investigators also found variants of the cylinders labeled with flavors, suspected as a ploy to mask these abusive practices. "From the examination conducted by the National Agency of Drug and Food Control (BPOM) and the Indonesian National Police laboratory (Labfor), there is no flavor. It purely contains N2O gas," he stated.
The Criminal Investigation Department of the Indonesian National Police has detained two bosses from PT SSS, the producers of Whip Pink. The suspects, identified by the initials AH and JH, have been detained at the Indonesian National Police Criminal Investigation Department detention center since Wednesday, July 22, 2026.
