TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Atletico Madrid were held to a 2-2 draw by visiting side Villarreal in Matchweek 2 of the 2026/27 Spanish League (La Liga) season at the Metropolitano in Madrid on Sunday, August 23, 2026.
The match saw Atletico defender Robin Le Normand receive a red card midway through the second half.
The result leaves Atletico in third place with four points from two matches, while the team nicknamed "The Yellow Submarine" climbed to seventh place with two points, according to the La Liga website as cited by Antara.
Atletico applied pressure from the start of the match. Los Colchoneros threatened the Villarreal defense on several occasions, though Nicolas Pepe and his teammates were also able to put up a fight.
Both teams traded attacks throughout the first half. Villarreal created several chances that forced saves from Jan Oblak, but no goals were scored before halftime.
In the second half, Atletico finally broke the deadlock in the 59th minute. Marc Pubill unleashed a left-footed shot from outside the penalty area that Villarreal goalkeeper Luiz Junior was unable to stop, giving Atletico a 1-0 lead.
That lead lasted only seven minutes. Villarreal were awarded a penalty after Morten Hjulmand fouled Tajon Buchanan inside the box.
Gerard Moreno stepped up to take the spot-kick and converted successfully, beating Oblak to make it 1-1 in the 66th minute.
Diego Simeone then brought on Julian Alvarez to boost Atletico's attacking threat. However, the situation became increasingly difficult for the hosts after Le Normand was shown a red card.
The Spanish national team defender was sent off after pushing Mikautadze. Referee Alejandro Hernandez issued the red card after reviewing the incident via VAR.
Villarreal were awarded another penalty for the foul. Mikautadze stepped up to take it and successfully put the visitors ahead 2-1.
Despite playing with 10 men, Atletico did not give up. Their efforts paid off in the 85th minute through Giuliano Simeone. Giuliano scored after connecting with a pass from Alex Baena, bringing the score to 2–2. There were no further goals before the match ended.
