Prabowo Urged to Improve U.S. Trade Ties as Retail, Furniture Exports Endure

1 week ago 6

TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Indonesian Furniture and Handicraft Industry Association (HIMKI) ensures the sector remains with strong export growth, with furnitures logging more than US$2 billion in export value while handicrafts are valued at US$ 700 million per year.

"Indeed, the figure has yet to reach the maximum potential as we target US$5 to 6 billion by the end of 2030,” said HIMKI chair Abdul Sobur on Tuesday, April 8, 2025.

According to Abdul, the furniture and handicraft industries can grow sustainably if supported by stronger government policies. He also hopes that the Prabowo administration will improve trade relations with the U.S. to erase import tariffs. Trump recently announced a 32 percent reciprocal tariff on Indonesian goods.

Abdul stated that the export growth of this sector has fluctuated due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which disrupted the global supply chain and restricted business activities.

Despite the slowdown, Abdul said demand surged in 2021-2022, especially from the U.S. and Europe, which he attributed to the work-from-home trend that boosted household furniture purchases. The export of furniture and handicrafts reached US$3,466,760,852 in 2021 and US$3,208,703,808 in 2022. The largest contributors were wooden furniture, rattan furniture, and metal furniture.

Meanwhile, a global drop in demand occurred in 2023, with exports lagging at US$2,424,411,143. In 2024, exports grew by 7.19 percent.

According to Abdul, Indonesia's export challenges were compounded by a weakening domestic market and intense global competition, especially from competing countries such as Vietnam and China.
