TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Since Wednesday, April 9, 2025, nearly 100 people have lost their lives due to intense rainfall affecting several regions across India and Nepal. Authorities warn that the unseasonal weather is expected to persist in the coming days.
According to Al Arabiya's report on Friday, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a multi-hazard alert on Wednesday, citing heatwaves in the western parts of the country and thunderstorms in the eastern and central regions.
In Bihar, one of India’s eastern states, local officials confirmed that at least 64 people have died in rain-related incidents since Wednesday.
Local media also reported that over 20 people have died in the most populous state in India, Uttar Pradesh.
Meanwhile, officials from the National Disaster Authority of Nepal stated that their country experienced lightning strikes and heavy rain which killed at least eight people.
The government-managed IMD predicts heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds in central and eastern India to continue until Saturday, 12 April 2025.
The rainy season usually begins in June in southern India. However, the recent summer months have been marked by intense heatwaves that have claimed many lives. IMD stated last week that India is expected to have a much hotter April, with above-normal temperatures in most parts of the country.
