TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Following the magnitude 7.7 earthquake that struck the Sangihe Islands Regency in North Sulawesi on Monday, June 8, 2026, at 06:37 Western Indonesia Time (WIB), the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) Operations Control Center recorded minor tsunami waves across several coastal monitoring stations, according to data updated until 08:22 WIB.
Abdul Muhari, Head of the BNPB Disaster Data, Information, and Communication Center, stated that the first wave was detected in Loloda, West Halmahera, at 07:20 WIB at a height of 0.09 meters, followed by waves reaching Ulusiau-Sitaro at 07:27 WIB at 0.18 meters, and Melonguane in the Talaud Islands at the exact same time, measuring 0.19 meters.
"Alongside these sea-level anomalies, tectonic activity around the main fault line remains highly active, releasing energy through a series of significant aftershocks measuring above magnitude 5.0," Muhari said in a written statement on Monday.
The string of aftershocks began at 07:11 WIB with a magnitude 5.9 tremor located 241 kilometers northwest of Karatung Island, followed closely by a magnitude 5.7 quake at 07:18 WIB, centered 211 kilometers northwest of the same island.
The seismic activity escalated again at 07:55 WIB when a magnitude 6.0 aftershock hit 201 kilometers northwest of Tahuna in the Sangihe Islands, shortly before Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) sensors picked up another magnitude 5.2 tremor at 08:10 WIB, located 172 kilometers northwest of Tahuna.
"Periodic field updates from the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) Operations Control Centers confirm that this succession of tremors was felt with varying intensities by residents across several neighboring areas," Muhari added.
Muhari noted that the tremors were felt quite strongly for three to four seconds in the Sangihe Islands Regency, triggering panic among local residents, while a moderate intensity was felt for three to four seconds in North Minahasa Regency, and for two to three seconds in Manado City.
Meanwhile, in the Talaud Islands Regency, he mentioned that the shocks were felt weakly for two to three seconds, though all local BPBD offices in these regions remain on high alert and continue to aggressively assess the post-earthquake damage.
Coastal Communities Urged to Stay Alert and Avoid Beaches
Although the sea-level anomalies recorded so far remain minor, the BNPB has urged all coastal communities under Watch and Advisory statuses, stretching across the coasts of North Sulawesi, North Maluku, Gorontalo, Central Sulawesi, and East Kalimantan, to maintain full vigilance.
"Given the frequency of these significant aftershocks occurring in rapid succession, residents are strongly advised to remain in safe areas, stay clear of beaches and compromised buildings, and strictly follow the official directives and updates issued by local BPBD officers and relevant authorities," Muhari said.
