TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Kuwait's cabinet condemned on Tuesday an alleged infiltration attempt by armed groups affiliated with Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) into Bubiyan Island. Iran's Foreign Ministry dismissed the claims as "completely baseless."
Kuwait's cabinet said the suspects clashed with Kuwaiti armed forces before being arrested, Kuwait's official news agency KUNA reported, citing a cabinet statement, as quoted by ANTARA. During interrogation, the suspects confessed to belonging to the IRGC and attempting to enter Kuwait by sea to carry out "hostile activities," the statement said.
Kuwait called on Iran to "immediately and unconditionally cease" what it called hostile acts that threaten regional security and stability, Kuwait said, adding that it "has the full and legitimate right to defend itself under Article 51 of the United Nations Charter."
Previously, Kuwait's Interior Ministry said four infiltrators tried to enter Bubiyan Island using a fishing boat allegedly hired for the operation. The ministry said a Kuwaiti military member was injured during the clash with the four infiltrators, all of whom have been arrested. According to media reports, the incident occurred on May 1, and the other two "infiltrators" have since escaped.
The Kuwaiti Foreign Ministry summoned Iran's Ambassador to Kuwait Mohammad Toutounchi and submitted an official protest statement to him regarding the incident.
At the same time, the Iranian Foreign Ministry flatly rejected Kuwait's claim. The ministry said in a statement that four Iranian officers entered Kuwaiti territorial waters by mistake while carrying out a routine maritime patrol mission due to interference with their navigation system.
Iranian Foreign Ministry strongly condemned what it called "the Kuwaiti government's inappropriate actions in exploiting the issue for political and propaganda purposes."
The Iranian Foreign Ministry said Iran respects the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries in the region and hopes Kuwaiti authorities will resolve existing issues through official channels and refrain from "rash comments and baseless claims."
Additionally, the Iranian Foreign Ministry stressed the need for immediate access to the Iranian Embassy in Kuwait in order to meet with detained Iranian citizens and, in accordance with international law, immediately release them.
This development comes amid heightened regional tensions following the U.S.-Israeli military operation against Iran. Kuwait said it had intercepted hundreds of drones and missiles during the conflict before a ceasefire came into effect on April 8.
