Jakarta Halts Waste Transport to Bantargebang as Landslide Kills Four

5 hours ago 3

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A landslide at the Bantargebang Integrated Waste Processing Site on Sunday, March 8, left four people dead and several others missing, authorities said.

According to Isnawa Adji, head of the Jakarta Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency, two of the victims were local residents while the other two were dump truck drivers working at the site.

“As a result of coordination with the Jakarta Environmental Agency, as of Monday at 10:00 AM, four people have died,” Isnawa said.

Meanwhile, Akhmad Rizkiansyah, head of operations at the Jakarta Search and Rescue Office, said the incident involved 13 victims in total, including four confirmed dead, five still missing, and four others found safe.

Authorities have deployed 336 personnel from multiple agencies to search for the missing victims and secure the landslide area.

Waste Shipments Temporarily Halted

The Jakarta Provincial Government has temporarily suspended waste shipments to the affected area following the deadly landslide.

Asep Kuswanto, head of the Jakarta Environmental Agency, said the suspension will remain in place until the evacuation process for the victims is completed.

“The Jakarta Provincial Government is committed to handling this situation quickly, carefully, and in a coordinated manner,” Asep said in a statement on Monday, March 9.

He added that the temporary halt aims to ensure the waste transport system continues to operate smoothly while minimizing truck queues during rescue operations.

Despite the disruption, the government said public waste management services would continue. Authorities have opened one temporary dumping point at the Bantargebang site during nighttime operations to keep garbage trucks from Jakarta running.

“To maintain the flow of waste trucks from Jakarta. Meanwhile, two other dumping points are still being arranged,” Asep said.

Officials have also begun stabilizing the affected area to prevent further landslides. Reinforcement and restructuring of the waste mound are being carried out gradually to ensure the landfill becomes stable and safe.

During the evacuation operation, rescue teams have removed five of the seven trucks trapped in the landslide area. The search for five victims who remain missing is ongoing, with heavy equipment continuing to dig through the debris.
