Indonesia Vows to Revoke Import Licenses Over Soybean Price Hikes

8 hours ago 1

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Indonesia's National Food Agency (Bapanas) head and Agriculture Minister Amran Sulaiman warned soybean importers against raising prices, saying the government could revoke their business licenses if they fail to maintain price stability.

“If there is a price increase, I will revoke the license and withhold recommendations, because import activities require recommendations from the Agriculture Ministry,” Amran said in Jakarta on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, as quoted by Antara.

Amran stressed the importance of stable soybean prices to support Indonesia’s tofu and tempeh producers, which rely heavily on imported soybeans. He urged importers not to increase prices arbitrarily.

“We ask soybean importers not to raise prices indiscriminately. You have been making profits for decades,” he said.

The minister said the government would investigate importers if significant price increases adversely affect tofu and tempeh producers. He emphasized that any unjustified price hikes would not be tolerated.

According to data from the Indonesian Tempe and Tofu Producers Cooperative Association (Gakoptindo), the average soybean price paid by tofu and tempeh producers nationwide stood at Rp11,126 per kilogram as of June 8. In Java, the average price was Rp10,868 per kg, with the highest average reaching Rp11,100 per kg.

Under current government regulations, the Reference Selling Price (HAP) for soybeans at the importer level is capped at Rp11,500 per kg, while prices paid by tofu and tempeh producers should not exceed Rp12,000 per kg.

Earlier, during a soybean industry meeting organized by Bapanas, Gakoptindo reported that imported soybean prices remained relatively stable and that recent increases were far lower than those seen during the global commodity surge in 2022.

Current soybean prices for tofu and tempeh producers range between Rp10,000 and Rp11,000 per kg.

On supply conditions, the soybean importers association reported that national soybean stocks totaled 450,000 tons as of June 2026, a level considered sufficient to meet domestic demand.

Importers have also pledged to keep price increases under control and prevent sharp spikes in order to maintain the stability of Indonesia’s soybean supply and prices.
