How to Track Electricity Consumption and Cost

2 hours ago 2

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian state-owned company PLN urges people to understand their energy consumption patterns and the components that make up their electricity bills so they can use electricity more efficiently according to their daily needs.

PLN Executive Vice President of Corporate Communications and Social and Environmental Responsibility (TJSL), Gregorius Adi Trianto, stated that the amount customers pay for electricity may vary from period to period. This is influenced by electricity usage as well as other cost components that apply to each region.

"Payment for electricity is not only influenced by the electricity tariff, but also by energy usage patterns and other components that follow local government regulations or applicable regulations," said Gregorius in a written statement on Friday, May 15, 2026.

He explained that household electricity tariffs have not changed since July 2022. Therefore, a change in the payment amount is usually due to a change in electricity consumption patterns or other additional cost components.

For postpaid services, electricity bills are calculated based on the amount of energy used, measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh), as recorded by the customer's meter. This value is then added to other components, such as street lighting tax (PPJ), stamps, and value-added tax (VAT) for certain groups.

Meanwhile, for prepaid services, not all the purchased electricity token value is converted into electricity. Some of the funds are first used to pay PPJ in accordance with local government regulations.

For example, Gregorius said, customers with 2,200 VA power who purchase an electricity token worth Rp200,000 in Jakarta will be subject to a 2.4 percent PPJ. This means the value converted into electricity is Rp195,200. "With a tariff of Rp1,444.70 per kWh, customers will receive around 135 kWh of electricity energy," he said.

PLN also encourages customers to use the PLN Mobile app to track their electricity usage and token purchases.

Specifically for postpaid customers, PLN offers the Self-Help Record Meter Readings (Swacam) feature, which enables customers to independently record meter numbers through the application. This feature is considered to help customers control monthly electricity usage more transparently.

"By understanding energy consumption patterns and payment components for electricity, customers can use electricity more efficiently and comfortably," he said.
