TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Residents across Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, and Bekasi (Greater Jakarta) woke up to a thick layer of volcanic ash coating their vehicles following the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau.

The volcanic ash blown into the Greater Jakarta area is far from ordinary dust that can simply be wiped away. Composed of hard, abrasive minerals and volcanic rock fragments, these particles can leave fine scratches on paintwork and glass if handled improperly.

"The particles can contain hard, abrasive mineral materials and volcanic fragments. If wiped or rubbed directly when dry, they can cause fine scratches on the clear coat and glass," Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) automotive expert Yannes Martinus Pasaribu told ANTARA on Sunday, September 6, 2026.

Furthermore, when volcanic dust mixes with water, dew, or drizzle and remains on the surface for extended periods, the resulting residue can create corrosive conditions on the bodywork.

Yannes shares guidance on how to safely remove volcanic ash from your vehicle without damaging its finish.

Tips to Remove Volcanic Ash from Vehicles

1. Avoid Dry Wiping or Using Rags Immediately

Never reach for a rag, duster, or dry cloth when your car is covered in ash. Rubbing dry particles directly against the surface acts like sandpaper, scratching the clear coat and glass.

2. Rinse Thoroughly with Running Water from Top to Bottom

The safest first step is to flush the ash away using a continuous stream of running water. Start from the roof of the vehicle and work your way down to flush particles off the bodywork safely. Ensure you use enough water to wash all particles off completely rather than just wetting the ash.

3. Do Not Activate Windshield Wipers While Dry

Lift windshield wipers away from the glass before rinsing the vehicle. Never turn on the wipers while the windshield is dry or coated in ash, as this will drag sharp minerals across the glass. Clean the wiper blades with water before using them again.

4. Wash with Car Shampoo and Microfiber Cloths

Once heavy ash deposits have been completely rinsed off with running water, wash the vehicle using standard car shampoo. Rinse thoroughly a second time and dry the surface using a clean microfiber towel.

5. Take Preventive Parking and Covering Precautions

If your car is not yet exposed to ash, park it in a covered garage or structure. If using a car cover, ensure the vehicle surface is already clean. Never put a cover on a car that is already ash-coated, as fabric friction will scratch the paint.
