TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A helicopter pilot lost his life after his aircraft crashed during a firefighting mission in Daegu, South Korea, on Sunday, April 6, 2025. The incident came just a month after the country experienced its worst forest fires, which killed 30 people and destroyed over 48,000 hectares of land.
Yonhap news agency reported that the helicopter, flown solo by the pilot, went down while battling the blaze on Sunday afternoon. The Daegu Fire Department has yet to release an official statement on the crash.
This tragedy marked the second fatality among firefighter helicopter pilots in the last month. The recent fire in Daegu, which was separate from the major disaster last March, has reportedly been successfully extinguished.
The massive forest fire in March was triggered by a combination of strong winds and extreme drought conditions, with the area experiencing a lack of rainfall for months. The year 2024 was recorded as the hottest year in South Korea's history, exacerbating the risk of fires.
The previous disaster not only claimed lives but also destroyed a number of valuable historical sites, including the Gounsa temple complex in Uiseong, dating back to the 7th century.
This latest incident once again highlights the high risks faced by firefighters in dealing with ecological disasters that are occurring more frequently due to climate change.
