TEMPO.CO, Jakarta Finance ministers from the Group of 20 (G20) major economy countries on Thursday agreed on the need to provide financial and humanitarian support to poor countries severely affected by the war in the Middle East.

As reported by Antara, after meeting in Washington, Japanese Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama told a press conference that the finance ministers and central bank governors had reached a "common understanding" regarding global economic imbalances.

Since the United States is holding the group's presidency this year, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent chaired the meeting during the spring meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank.

According to Katayama, Bessent spoke about the risks faced by vulnerable countries due to the impacts of conflict, including food insecurity and potential fertilizer shortages.

Katayama said that Bessent also explained the U.S.' position on the war with Iran, which included a call for other G20 members to cooperate on sanctions against Tehran.

Following their discussions, the G20 finance ministers did not issue a joint statement.
