TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The South Sumatra Police Department has temporarily closed the East Sumatra Route from Jambi to Palembang due to the increasing traffic density before the peak of Eid homecoming. The closure aims to ease congestion on the main route.

The Chief of the South Sumatra Police, Inspector General Sandi Nugroho, stated that this policy was taken after coordinating with the Jambi Regional Police. He mentioned that diverting the traffic is necessary to prevent worsening congestion on the eastward route.

"To avoid long traffic jams on the East Sumatra Route, we direct holiday travelers to use alternative routes via Lubuk Linggau," said Sandi on Monday night, March 16, 2026.

He also urged drivers to follow the instructions of the officers in the field for travel safety.

In this diversion scheme, vehicles from Aceh, North Sumatra, and Riau are directed towards Sarolangun and Lubuk Linggau before continuing the journey to South Sumatra.

Alternative Routes

The police have prepared two alternative routes for holiday travelers. The first route goes through Jambi - Sarolangun - Lubuk Linggau - Musi Rawas - Lahat - Prabumulih - Palembang. From Prabumulih, drivers can continue their journey via the toll road to Palembang to expedite travel time.

The alternative route without tolls goes through the route Jambi - Sarolangun - Lubuk Linggau - Musi Rawas - Sekayu - Betung - Palembang.

To support the traffic diversion, the police have stationed personnel at several strategic points, especially in the Lubuk Linggau, Musi Rawas, and Banyuasin areas, which are the main vehicle diversion routes. Officers are also placed at several intersections to direct drivers.

In addition to traffic diversion, the police remind cargo vehicles, especially trucks with three or more axles, to adhere to operational restrictions during the homecoming period.

The Head of Public Relations of the South Sumatra Regional Police, Commissioner Nandang Mu'min Wijaya, urges the public to remain cautious during travel. He also advises drivers not to drive when feeling tired.

"The public is expected to obey traffic signs, follow the instructions of officers, and ensure that the vehicle and the driver are in prime condition before continuing the journey," said Nandang.

The police also advise the public to monitor the latest traffic information through the official police channels to avoid congestion on the main homecoming routes.
