TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Ministry of Religious Affairs will hold an isbat session to determine the start of Syawal 1447 H on March 19, 2026. The session will coincide with the 29th of Ramadan 1447 H at the Auditorium H.M. Rasjidi, Ministry of Religious Affairs Office, Central Jakarta.
The isbat session will be attended by various parties, including representatives of friendly countries embassies, Chairman of Commission VIII of the Indonesian House of Representatives, the Supreme Court, the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI), the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the Geospatial Information Agency (BIG), the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), Bosscha Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), Planetarium, expert astronomers from Islamic community organizations, and members of the Ministry of Religious Affairs' calculation and observation team.
The Director General of Islamic Community Guidance, Abu Rokhmad, explained that the isbat session is a government mechanism to determine the beginning of the Hijri month, especially Ramadan, Syawal, and Zulhijah.
"As usual, the isbat session starts with a seminar on the hilal (crescent moon) position presentation by the Ministry of Religious Affairs' calculation and observation team. It is then followed by a closed session to discuss the sighting results of the hilal from various regions, before finally announcing to the public," said Abu in a written statement on Tuesday, March 17, 2026.
He explained that based on astronomical calculations (hisab), on the day of the sighting or the 29th of Ramadan 1447 H, which coincides with Thursday, March 19, 2026, the crescent's altitude across Indonesia ranges from 054'27'' to 37'52''. Meanwhile, the elongation angle of the crescent ranges from 432'40'' to 606'11''.
He further stated that according to the entire calculation system, the conjunction approaching Syawal 1447 H occurred on March 19, 2026, at around 08:23 AM WIB (UTC+7). However, the determination of the beginning of Syawal still awaits the sighting results from various regions in Indonesia.
"The determination of the beginning of Syawal 1447 H will await the sighting results reports from all regions, which will then be discussed in the isbat session," he said.
The Ministry of Religious Affairs monitors the hilal at 117 locations across Indonesia.
