TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has warned that the El Niño phenomenon could reduce rainfall in parts of Indonesia, including West Java, during the week of June 8–14, 2026.
“Overall, rainfall in West Java tends to decrease,” said Diana Hertanti, a weather forecaster at the BMKG Climatology Station in West Java, in a statement on Sunday, June 7, 2026. However, she noted that light to moderate rain may still occur locally, especially in the afternoon to evening.
According to BMKG’s forecast for West Java, on Monday, June 8, weather conditions from 07:00 AM to 01:00 PM are expected to be generally clear to cloudy, with the potential for short-duration light rain in several areas, including Bogor Regency, Garut, Tasikmalaya Regency and City, Ciamis, Banjar City, and Pangandaran.
From 01:00 PM to 07:00 PM, conditions are expected to remain clear to cloudy, with possible light rain in Bogor Regency and City, Sukabumi Regency, Cianjur, West Bandung Regency, Purwakarta, Subang, Garut, Tasikmalaya Regency and City, Ciamis, and Banjar City.
Between 07:00 PM and 01:00 AM, similar conditions are forecast, with light rain possible in Bogor Regency and City, Sukabumi Regency, Cianjur, West Bandung Regency, Bandung Regency, Subang, Garut, Tasikmalaya Regency and City, and Ciamis.
Temperatures are expected to range from 18 to 35 degrees Celsius, with humidity levels of 40 to 95 percent. Winds will blow from the southeast at speeds of 5 to 40 kilometers per hour. Moderate to very heavy rainfall is expected only in Cianjur on Sunday, while no such conditions are forecast from Monday through Saturday.
Separately, Acting Head of the BMKG Geophysics Station in Bandung, Edi Wibowo, said El Niño is a sea surface temperature anomaly in the equatorial Pacific Ocean that is warmer than normal. It can be categorized as weak, moderate, or strong.
“For this year, the dry season in West Java is predicted to be longer, with below-normal rainfall,” he told Tempo on Monday, June 8, 2026. He added that the peak of the dry season in West Java is expected in August, with a 90 percent probability.
BMKG urged communities to prepare mitigation measures for the dry season, particularly in agriculture through drought-resistant crops, in irrigation through reservoir management and system improvements, and in forestry through mapping and anticipating areas prone to forest and land fires.
