TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The 2026 FIFA World Cup will feature 52 referees, including two of the Premier League’s most renowned officials, Michael Oliver and Anthony Taylor. They will not only officiate the tournament but also join the players in earning eye-watering sums of money.
According to GiveMeSport, the 2026 FIFA World Cup referees are expected to earn $100,000 (around 75,000 pounds) each. The figure is roughly double what officials received at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.
Even more impressively, the amount does not include bonuses. Referees retained for the knockout stages will receive additional payments at each successive round, with the largest payout reserved for those selected to officiate the final on July 19.
For Michael Oliver and Anthony Taylor, however, such a staggering figure is nothing new. The pair are understood to have already earned around 250,000 pounds this season through their officiating duties in the Premier League, FA Cup, and UEFA Champions League.
During the tournament, referees will also be assisted by VAR (Video Assistant Referee), which is set to receive expanded powers under the new rules. According to Mirror, VAR officials will be able to intervene in additional situations, including disallowing goals if an attacking player commits a foul in the build-up to the goal, even before the ball crosses the line.
