TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto is scheduled to receive the letters of credence from extraordinary and plenipotentiary ambassadors dispatched by friendly nations stationed in Indonesia. The official ceremony will take place at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Monday, June 8, 2026.
According to the Presidential Secretariat, the handover of the credentials will take place this afternoon. The official reception of these diplomatic documents by the host head of state is a necessary protocol before the incoming ambassadors can formally assume their duties.
At least 17 ambassador-designates from friendly countries will present their credentials to President Prabowo. Some of the envoys have reportedly waited for up to eight months to deliver these letters.
State Secretary Minister Prasetyo Hadi previously confirmed the agenda. According to Prasetyo, the event will take place on the same day as the inauguration of several state officials on Monday.
"For efficiency, we plan to hold it on the same day," he stated at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Thursday, June 6, 2026.
Prasetyo mentioned that the credential handover forum will be held separately from the inauguration ceremony, despite being scheduled for the same day. Some of the state officials set to be inaugurated include the president's special advisors and the head of the National Nutrition Agency.
Criticism over Prolonged Diplomatic Delays
The lengthy delay in the handover of credentials from foreign ambassador-designates to President Prabowo was previously criticized by Dino Patti Djalal, who served as Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister during President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's administration. According to Dino, at least 17 ambassador candidates have been waiting for months to present their diplomatic papers.
According to Dino, certain diplomats have been waiting for up to eight months. He expressed concern that this prolonged delay could negatively affect Indonesia's diplomatic standing.
In response, Foreign Affairs Minister Sugiono explained that these ambassadors arrived in Indonesia at various times following the last credential handover ceremony in November. According to him, the diplomats must navigate a series of gradual administrative processes before finally presenting their credentials to the president.
Sugiono stated that the delayed handover of the letters of credence to the Indonesian President has not impacted bilateral cooperation with the respective countries. The Gerindra Party Secretary-General admitted to having already met individually with each of the ambassadors awaiting their official reception.
He assured that relationships and communication with the ambassadors continue to run as smoothly as ever. "Certainly, the substance of bilateral cooperation continues," Sugiono said after a bilateral meeting with Madagascar's Foreign Minister Alice N'Diaye at the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Jakarta on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, as quoted by Antara.
For context, the last credential handover ceremony was held at the Merdeka Palace in November 2025. At that time, President Prabowo received the letters of credence from 12 extraordinary and plenipotentiary ambassadors from friendly nations.
