TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia is preparing about Rp11 trillion (approximately US$600 million) to open more than 200 million bank accounts for the citizens, according to the Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto.

This plan is part of President Prabowo Subianto's bid to strengthen financial inclusion and financial literacy levels in the country by ensuring each citizen has a bank account.

The funds will come from the State Budget, with each account receiving an initial fee of Rp50,000. Airlangga, however, could not confirm whether the budget will come entirely from the 2026 or 2027 State Budget.

Airlangga also said the bank account scheme is still under discussions between Bank Indonesia (BI) and the Financial Services Authority (OJK).

"We will prepare it soon. We will discuss the rollout with BI and OJK," he explained.

Airlangga hoped to roll out the policy before the year-end. He said the plan will be implemented in phases.

Previously, Airlangga brought up the Indonesian government's plan to create mass bank accounts for Indonesian citizens at Bank Rakyat Indonesia (BRI) and Bank Syariah Indonesia (BSI).

Airlangga stated that one of the possible approaches to this proposal is syncing the data with the population and civil registration (Dukcapil) data at the Ministry of Home Affairs.
