TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - At least 41 people suffered minor injuries after the heaviest rainfall ever recorded battered Nagoya, central Japan, prompting the city government to announce emergency relief measures on Wednesday, according to Anadolu, as quoted by Antara.
Heavy rains brought by linear rainbands pounded the Tokai region on Tuesday. The rain caused flooding on roads and railway lines and paralyzed transportation in Nagoya, Kyodo News reported.
Local authorities reported that around 1,600 people had sought refuge at evacuation centers as of Tuesday evening. At least 200 vehicles were damaged as of Wednesday morning.
The heavy rains left many commuters and students stranded overnight due to disruptions to train and subway services.
The Japan Meteorological Agency on Tuesday issued a Level 5 flood emergency warning—the highest level—for the Shonai River, which flows through Aichi and Gifu Prefectures. The warning was issued after the river's water level rose due to extremely heavy rain.
NHK reported that rain clouds formed in the Tokai and Shikoku regions, triggering torrential downpours in several areas.
Meanwhile, on Wednesday, the Japan Weather Agency warned that heavy rain could continue to lash much of Japan through Thursday, as an active front moves along the Pacific coast.
Up to 200 millimeters (7.9 inches) of rain is expected to fall in the Tokai and Kinki regions in the 24 hours through Thursday morning. Meanwhile, Shikoku is expected to receive up to 150 mm of rain, and Kanto-Koshin, including Tokyo, up to 120 mm.
Authorities warned that even relatively small amounts of additional rain could trigger landslides or flooding in areas already saturated by previous rainfall.
