Her mother, Ann Jarvis, was deeply involved in community work, supporting mothers and families, especially after enduring the heartbreaking loss of many of her own children to disease. Inspired by her mother’s devotion, Anna sought to create a meaningful tribute.
After Ann Jarvis passed away in 1905, Anna set out to honor her legacy by establishing a nationwide movement of Mother’s Day in 1908. Her efforts culminated in 1914, when President Woodrow Wilson officially declared it a national holiday. The tradition was eventually adopted in Australia in the mid-1920s.
